Enapay looked over Delsin's shoulder as the boy sat on the ground whilst drawing a map in the snow in front of him. To Enapay, the seemingly random lines made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Although, Delsin seemed to have no problem reading them. "We'll go this way." He said as he pointed to his left. The boy climbed up in to the saddle that was strapped to Enapay's back. Enapay then headed in the direction of which his handler pointed.
They were in the middle of nowhere, or so Enapay thought. They were surrounded by the vast arctic snow, a field with mountains in the distance on one side and a forest of pines with a small mountain looming over it on the other. The two had been searching for an ice cave for two days now. They had been following the tree line all day long, searching for a cave that they had heard about from another rider. Who knows if it even exists, at this rate Enapay was thinking that it either didn’t exist or they had gone the wrong way.
Enapay was walking slowly along the pines as Delsin's head turned and looked every which way. It was silent, the only sounds were the crunch of snow as Enapay's large feet buried themselves in to the ground with each step. He looked off in to the pine trees and saw nothing, except trees and snow. He had no idea where Delsin was taking him, but he listened only to make the boy happy.
Delsin suddenly pulled back on the reins causing Enapay to suddenly halt. Enapay turned his head to the side to try to glare at the young handler, but he wasn't paying attention of course. Instead the boy was squinting at the forest, he was trying to make out something in the distance. Delsin maneuvered he reins so that Enapay was now facing the trees and willed him forward. Enapay obeyed although he had no idea what Delsin saw, the boy was weird, but he and Enapay had bonded so they were stuck with each other.
The sun was starting to go down, the two had been trying to find this cave since the sun had risen that morning. Soon they'd have to find somewhere safe to set up camp for the night. The large pine trees were making it even darker, and the shadow of the mountain wasn't helping either.
Enapay twisted and turned around the trees, trying to get through to the mountain. He ducked his head under a low branch, then heard two thumps, one after the other. He felt like a weight was lifted off of him. He turned his head to face the saddle expecting to see a young boy, but saw nothing... no Delsin. That's when Enapay swung his whole body around in search for the young rider. Finally he found him sitting on the ground rubbing his head with a pile of snow in his lap.
Enapay let out a playful bark as if to laugh at the kid, while Delsin just glared at him. He then ran around the boy while nudging him with his muzzle. Once Delsin stood up and was about to climb back on the saddle, Enapay took off running towards the mountain. He could hear shouts from behind him and the crunching of snow as his handler ran after him. They would surely get to the rock face faster going at this rate.
Enapay made sure to stay at a pace that Delsin could keep up with, a little running would be good for the kid. Once they reached the base of the mountain Enapay stopped. Delsin was right behind him, but he stopped to bend over with his hands on his knees and was breathing hard. Once he finally caught his breath, he took the chance to scold the big guy. Running off without him was a no no and he had better not do it again.
Delsin then climbed back on and looked over the rock face. He then spotted a small dark hole in the side of the mountain. It was still a ways away, but they had finally found what they thought to be the cave they were looking for.
The two set off in the direction of the small black dot. Enapay was excited to see this cave, it was supposedly made of ice. The other rider had it said it looked as if you were underwater, which Enapay didn’t understand how that would be possible. He sped up his pace to try to get there faster.
After a while, the sun had started to slowly disappear. They had finally made it the cave, well almost. They still had to make their way up to it. It was higher up than they had thought it was.
Enapay placed one wobbly foot in front of the other, small pebbles cascaded down the side of the small mountain. The path up to the cave front was very small and rocky. He had to take his time climbing up to make sure neither of them fell and got hurt. Delsin was quiet and was moving his body weight in different directions to make it easier for Enapay to climb. His feet slipped a couple of times, but he always caught himself. Looking down, he saw his footprints littering the otherwise clean snow that had fallen the night before. Tonight would be the second night camping out while on the mission to find this ice cave. With any luck they would be on their way home in the morning.
Once Enapay had finally made it to the mouth of the cave, the ground leveled out and Delsin climbed out of the saddle. He landed on the rock with a small thud and then started digging through his bags. After a couple minutes he pulled out a lantern and lit it. He held up the light and started walking forward with Enapay following.
At first the cave was just dark, it was just solid gray rock. Enapay was starting to think that this was not actually the cave they were told about, but then they saw a blue hue up ahead, the space around them started to have a cyan colored tint to it. Delsin turned around to look at Enapay with a smile on his face, they had finally found it. Delsin blew out the flame that lit the lantern, leaving only the blue light ahead to lead their way. As the tunnel started to curve it also got brighter, which was making Enapay even more excited. Finally they had turned the corner.
The first thing Enapay saw was the blinding bright blue light, once his eyes had adjusted he saw the rolling waves of the ices on the ceiling. There was no other way to explain it, they looked exactly like waves in the sea. Just like the other rider had said, Enapay felt as if he was underwater, but only here he could breathe. Enapay ventured further in to the cave and was surrounded in blue. He was mesmerized, this was the most amazing thing he had ever seen. He looked towards Delsin, who was looking around in awe, he was turning in circles, taking everything in. Once the boy had made a full 360 he stopped to look at his companion. A smile lit up his face and then he quickly made his way over to Enapay only to hug him. Enapay reveled in the warmth of his buddy and felt a sense of pride and accomplishment from finding this place.
"We did it, we finally found it." said the boy while he stood smiling with his arm still around Enapay. They stayed in that position until almost all of the blue had faded away. Delsin lit the lantern once again since the light had gone. They had decided to set up camp in the cave so to see the rolling waves of ice once again in the morning when the sun rose.
